- I wouldn't dash right out and get it, and if you do be sure to keep a
- back up of your 2.0a2 version. I just got done testing the 2.0a3 on
- my machines (486's with 16Mb RAM, 3C503's etc.), and to my great
- disappointment and even greater disbelief the new Mosaic is even worse
- than the previous one - a lot flakier and even less stable! I wish they
- had fixed their bugs instead of going for 32-bit frills. On my machine
- running MS TCP/IP-32 (March beta), the new Mosaic 2.0a3 can't even get
- past the first name server lookup - its scroll bar button flashes madly
- in a missing scroll bar, and the URL info lines are just a hole in the
- screen revealing the dregs of past menus. Eventually, it reports HTAccess
- errors, and Win32s Unhandled Exception errors, then GPF's then ... its
- reboot time once again, folks! At least I used to be able to get in
- about 20-30 min before it trashed my machine - now I can't get in at all.
- The only refreshing thing is some variety in the error boxes - hadn't
- seen a Win32s UE before. (The Win32s incidently works fine, and the
- freecell card game really is cute. Also, ALL my other TCP/IP apps still
- work just great - WS_FTP, Eudora, WinQVTnet, Trumpet, TrumpetTelnet,
- Hgopher, etc.) The reminds me of the Cello bug, but at least Cello
- gracefully reported failed DNS lookups and sat placidly in its local
- home page. On my machine running NetManage's Chameleon (4.03), the
- initial DNS seemed to have worked, the second one rebooted me. Another
- try... made it to a second site - clicked a hotspot and ... you guessed
- it Win32s Error- Unhandled Exception...GPF...reboot. On this machine
- the old Mosaic would run about 10-15 min before the time bomb went off
- and it rebooted - now I was down to a record 3 min maximum prior to being
- rebooted. I've had it!! Mosaic has a lot of potential and could be VERY
- nice, but any software this unstable and this picky about exactly whose
- TCP/IP stack and winsock you're running isn't worth the hassle!! I have
- run the other apps I mentioned above with 5 different TCP/IP stack/winsock
- implementations so far (MS TCP/IP-32, NetManage, Trumpet, MS TCP/IP for WFW,
- and FTP) and not had a single problem.
- So... Mosaic 2.0a3 went straight into the trash less than 2 hrs after I
- unzipped it - a new record. I've gone back to Mosaic 2.0a2 with a new-
- found appreciation - at least I CAN do WWW for 20-30 min (sure beats
- what I could do in 3 min); and those periodic reboots are probably good
- for my computer, and give me a chance to go get a cup of coffee.
- Too bad guys... maybe in the May release, right?!
